I have a major doubt... That how in sets the focus puller works and how finely focus is pulled for a shot... Because I see no focus missing in any features films.. And how it's done?
It’s a highly skilled and highly stressful job to be a focus puller. It’s almost as stressful as being a chef because you got to deliver the perfect take each time.
As a DP, there are 3 main soldiers in your arsenal, the Gaffer, the Key Grip and the Focus Puller, who ensure that your work always looks good.
As a focus puller, you’re only working off your judgement on how far or close the subject is to your lens. There are lots of times when things happen on set which are completely different than the rehearsals that we’ve done. When something like that happens, I don’t even need to tell my focus puller when to pull focus or where to pull to, because he/she is so tuned to the story and the scene that they know exactly what’s going to happen next. There are some really good focus pullers who hardly take marks because their judgment is so good. Thank god for them!
Hi Hari. The focus puller is an extremely talented person and ensures he gives usable takes, take after take, for every day of his shoot. Occasionally there may be misses, and these are not used in the final film. Extensive focus marks are taken, and sometimes in complicated shots, rehearsals for focus are also taken.
Agree with Param.
